Our Second Grade Plans, 2007-2008

Language Arts
     Spelling: The Complete Guide to Teaching Spelling: Level One (now called All About Spelling: The Complete Guide).
     Grammar: Growing With Grammar: Grades One and Two for the first nineteen weeks, followed by Growing With Grammar: Grade Three for the remainder of the year.
     Writing: Printing Power for handwriting practice; copywork and beginning dictation for writing development.
     Reading: In addition to daily reading related to history, science, and classical studies, and thirty minutes of ‘free’ reading, Sonlight’s Grade 3-5 Readers and periodic use of Early Reading Comprehension workbook.

Mathematics
     Drill: CalcuLadder drills daily; skip counting practice both orally and in writing; Audio Memory songs; TurboTwist; Math Card Games from RightStart.
     Concepts: The Blue Book and The Green Book from the Miquon Series.
     Symbols: Developmental Math Levels Seven, Eight, Nine, and Ten.

Historical Studies
     History: The Story of the World Volume Two plus review questions, coloring pages, mapwork, and supplemental reading as detailed in The Story of the World Volume Two Activity Guide.
     Classical Studies: Continued periodic review of Greek and Roman mythology, plus an introduction to Norse mythology via D’Aulaire.

Science
     Study earth and space science using R.E.A.L. Science Earth and Space: Level One, as well as supplemental materials.

Foreign Language
     Latin: Latin For Children Primer A and appropriate supplemental books and activities.
     Spanish: Perioidic review of La Clase Divertida audio and video lessons.

The Arts
     Art Appreciation: Study of The Children’s Book of Art, as well as art appreciation during Master’s Academy art classes.
     Music Appreciation: Study of The Story of the Orchestra, as well as music appreciation during Master’s Academy music classes.
     Drama: Both appreciation and skills will be covered during Master’s Academy drama classes.
     Dance: Both appreciation and skills will be covered through Introduction to Ballet, Introduction to Tap, and Georgia Ballet’s professional performances.
     Art Skills: In addition to art skills during Master’s Academy art classes, study will continue with Gary, and will begin in Drawing with Children.
     Music Skills: In addition to music skills during Master’s Academy music classes, piano lessons will commence midway through the year.
