Our Kindergarten Curriculum, 2005-2006

Language Arts
     Phonics: The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading (Wise, Jessie and Sara Buffington), along with the audio companion and magnetic alphabet board.
     Reading Practice: Bob Books First!, Bob Books Fun!, Bob Books Kids!, Bob Books Pals!, Bob Books Wow!, and various graded readers.
     Spelling: Spelling Workout A, begun during the second half of the year.
     Handwriting: Letters & Numbers for Me, from Handwriting for Tears.
     Grammar: First Language Lessons: Levels One & Two, started so that Lesson 42 correlates with the proper lesson (182) in The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading.

Mathematics
Miquon series, using Miquon Orange followed by Miquon Red, supplemented with books from the Developmental Math series: Levels One, Two, and Three.

Science
The Kingfisher First Animal Encyclopedia, The Kingfisher First Human Body Encyclopedia, and Green Thumbs, supplemented with lots of early-elementary level science picture books.

Geography
Audio Memory’s States & Capitals and Geography Songs, as well as Things People Do, Then and Now, The Year at Maple Hill Farm, People, and Peter Spier’s The Star Spangled Banner.

Poetry
A Child’s Calendar (Updike), plus selections from Read-Aloud Poems for Young People and When We Were Very Young.

Literature
Picture book read alouds, drawn from books already owned, as well as library books selected primarily from lists such as Honey for A Child’s Heart and Under the Chinaberry Tree. The Little House series for read-alouds.

Miscellaneous
     Music: Listening to various musical genres through albums owned as well as those from the library.
     Art: Sporadic art projects and occasionally looking at books such as A Child’s Book of Art.
     Spanish: Beginning sometime in the spring, using La Clase Divertida.
